The Braves expect to add John Smoltz and Rafael Soriano to their bullpen during the six-game trip that starts Tuesday, but exactly when hasn't been determined.

Smoltz had planned to accompany the team on the flight to Milwaukee on Monday night, but manager Bobby Cox said the veteran pitcher had flu-like symptoms and would stay in Atlanta and perhaps make a rehab appearance for Class A Rome before joining the Braves on the trip.

Smoltz, who has been out four weeks recovering from an inflamed shoulder, will be activated as soon as he says he's ready, Cox said. The manager reiterated that Smoltz would come back as a reliever.

Soriano, out since the second week of the season with elbow tendinitis, still has some discomfort and is scheduled to throw another side session in the bullpen Tuesday at Milwaukee.

If the session goes well he could be activated during the three-game series with the Brewers, despite the lingering discomfort.

"I don't think it'll be a big deal," said Soriano, who made two minor-league rehab appearances last week. Asked if that meant his elbow felt good, he said, "It feels alright."

Meanwhile, lefty Mike Gonzalez will have his surgically repaired elbow checked by a team doctor Tuesday before beginning what could be a one- to two-week rehab assignment in Class AA or Class AAA.
